Kössen – Paragliding in the Kaiserwinkl Region

Kössen, located in the scenic Kaiserwinkl valley of Tyrol, is one of Austria’s most well-known paragliding destinations. Its reliable thermals, generous valley winds, and wide-open terrain make it a favorite spot for XC pilots throughout the spring and summer season.

The main takeoffs offer excellent exposure to morning and midday thermals, with smooth updrafts forming along the surrounding ridgelines. Conditions can become stronger in the afternoon, rewarding experienced pilots with powerful climbs and long-distance flight opportunities.

Access to the launches is simple thanks to cable car transport from the valley. The infrastructure is pilot-friendly, with clear signage, well-maintained ramps, and ample space for preparing gliders. Kössen’s flying sites are also known for their forgiving layout, making them suitable for both progressing pilots and XC enthusiasts.

From above, pilots enjoy panoramic views over the Kaiser Mountains, the lush meadows of Kaiserwinkl, and the winding river valleys that channel thermals throughout the day. XC routes commonly extend east toward the Leogang and Loferer peaks, or west along the Inntal valley system.

Landing is straightforward at the large, grassy official landing zone in the valley. Multiple windsocks and generous approach space make the site comfortable even during busy days or in moderate valley winds. Being a popular school area, the landing field is active, and pilots should remain attentive during final approach.

Kössen is a regulated flying area, and visitors are encouraged to check local guidelines, respect school activity, and monitor weather conditions carefully. The combination of strong thermals and predictable valley winds provides exceptional flying—especially from April to August.
